Outer Slide weight posting
Outer Slide weight posting
I remember a topic on the old tromboneforum named "outer slide weigh in" where owners posted the weight of their trombone slides. I liked that very much. Maybe we can start a new list? Or is there a place where the old topics are listed?
- Yamaha YSL 683G 200 gr (sorry, we use Gramm and Kilogramm) yellow brass
- Conn 78H 254 gr yellow brass
- Besson 630 ( ex Boosey and Hawkes, maybe built by Kühnl and Hoyer in Germany) 200 gr yellow brass
The Yammie fits on the Conn and vice versa, same with the Yamaha 645..

Re: Slide weight posting
I'll bite.
Yamaha 421G (bass) 220 gm
Courtois AC280BO (nickel) 290 gm
Olds Ambassador 190 gm
Never noticed my Yamaha's slide was so much lighter but I did notice the whole horn was lighter than my 0.547 tenor. Must be the bigger bore allowing in more lightweight air--I'm not serious.

Re: Slide weight posting
BTW, my slides are not interchangeable (0.485 / 0.500; 0.547; and 0.563) But the bells of the Yamaha and the Courtios are happy with either slide between them.

Shires B62/78: 278
Edwards V: 285
Conn 112H: 234

Miraphone BBb contra: 593!
I have always preferred the Shires dual bore slide to my Edwards V (the single bore slide that comes with the B502) because it felt so much lighter. Those few grams make a big difference.
Also surprising is the F contra slide, which is only 20 grams heavier than a bass slide despite being longer and wider.

Re: Slide weight posting
Couldn't find that thread with the search function. I still have the file where I sorted the outer slides by weight, but when I try to paste it in as a reply, the format becomes unrecognizable. If you're really interested in that old listing I could try to upload it somehow.

The formatting will go awry somehow, but hopefully it will still be clear enough.

Re: Slide weight posting
This seems like a great entry for the Trombone Chat Wiki.
Don't know if anyone else is having trouble, but I can't see to login to the wiki portion of the site.
(I've emailed Matt about the problem I'm having.)

Re: Slide weight posting
In a perfect world, it would be in a nice, sortable table.
Given that this is gathered from many sources, there's bound to be some bad data. There's also some models (Conn 70H!) that were produced in several different configurations and it'd be nice to know which version was weighed.

Re: Slide weight posting
Aha, outer slide only! Then the numbers make more sense! My M&W slide is at work now but I have a Shires TW2547LW at home, weighs in at 232 grams.

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
Hi!
Just found this topic, very interesting to read through all the different weights!
I weighed the outers of my Shires B62NLW-slide and it was 266 grams. But I should mention that I didn’t remove the leather handguard.
Cheers

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
Some of those numbers look a bit off. The King 3B slide is definitely not a lightweight slide. Neither is the Super. Are you sure those numbers are accurate?

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
The weight of the slides for different instruments of the "same" models may differ slightly. So it would be good to collect measurements for many instruments of the same model. This would also make individual measurement errors less important (and perhaps easy to spot). It would also tell us which manufacturers build slides more consistently.

On the 3B slides on the chart? 3B isn't light, but it's not heavy. Looks right to me.

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
I'm sure my numbers are accurate (within the limits of my scale, which is not certified). I neither stake claim to nor accept responsibility for the others. All I did was organize them into a table.
Would it be possible to have something better? Sure. Certified, calibrated scales. Serial numbers. Make sure the data is for unmodified slides that are perfectly clean and dry and have never been refinished. Just plain lots more data points. But this is the data we have.
As for Super slides? They're lighter than they look.

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
Regarding 3B slides, depends on when they were manufactured. Older ones have oversleeves and are heavier. Newer ones (maybe mid-70s on, though not sure when they started doing this) have double drawn outers with no oversleeves. These are definitely lighter than their older counterparts.

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
The only one sticking out to me is the Holton 180 slide weighing in at more than almost everything on the list. What the replacement tubes, kitchen sink drain parts?

Re: Outer Slide weight posting
Early 90's Bach 42 LT slide with bronze M/K crook: 228g.
I'd be curious to see what a stock LT slide weights in at and whether the crook makes a notable difference or not (maybe a few grams but nothing significant I would guess). In any case interesting that it's around 40 grams lighter than the standard 42 slide and near the bottom of the scale in the same range as small bore horns.
