Open Box Bach 42AFG Won on Auction

Post by Cotboneman »

I occasionally make a minimum bid on trombones on Ebay, though Heaven knows I don't need another one. I don't get into bidding wars. But recently I spied a Bach 42AFG, listed as a new, open box item by a retailer who is an authorized Bach, King, Selmer Yamaha, etc. seller. Knowing the horn retails for over $4700, my interest was piqued and I placed a bid of $2350, never expecting the bid to be accepted. No one else bid on the instrument after seven days, so I won it. The horn arrived in pristine condition the day after Christmas. What a nice Christmas gift to myself!

I was never a real fan of the original Bach Thayer Valve, mostly because I thought it took away some of the resistance that I do like in the upper registers of the horn. The valve was also not a very comfortable fit on my face, with the valve pushing a bit into my neck. I had read some good reviews on the Infinity Valve, however, and pre-Covid had tried out a 42AF horn in a local music store. That was much better than the old one in my view.

So, having put this instrument though it's paces today, I would say that I affirm my positive rating from my experience last October. It's a strong player, with a really good slide. I'm looking forward to discovering more things on this horn.
