Slide for Bach V16

So my friends father passed away recently, and he texted me that among all of his things was a valve trombone. I get to his house and find a mint Bach 16 with the valve section (no slide but a case that fits both). All the slides and valves move well and there’s almost no lacquer wear, just a few mute pings. The serial # puts it at 1979 and to me it looks like the case matches that era.

I’m debating whether I should buy it or post it here to sell for him, and I guess the deciding factor is what slides I could fit on this bell. I’m assuming a 16/16M would, but do the smaller ones also fit? Ideally I’d find a 6 slide; on a separate note is there a difference between the 6 bell and 16 (not M) bell or are all the <36 sections the same minus the M gooseneck?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the 6 bells were made on a different mandrel from the others (8, 12, 16). Of course, that could be from the NY and Mt. Vernon days only. Tuning slides might also be different. The 12 and 16 (not M) I believe are identical.

My 12 & 36 are interchangeable, but 1 goes extremely sharp & the other extremely flat, with not enough tuning slide to bring it close.

Yet, still interchangeable. Not necessarily something you want to play, but you can plug a 39 slide in a 36 if you want.

Is this true across the eras? I recently bought an amazing Mt Vernon 36B and was searching around for a more modern slide to use with the bell section and saw this on hickeys

It makes it sound like post-corporation 36 slides are slightly different and won’t seat right on pre-80s bells.

I was going to try and find a .525 Edwards slide and have Osmun swap the tenon to a 36 part, but now I’m concerned that a new 36 slide tenon won’t work.

Anyway know for sure? Have you tried using a Corp or MV slide on a post 80’s 36 bell?

Thanks for this! I had a feeling they wouldn’t bother making separate bits for the different ones but I’m glad to have it confirmed. Now to find a 6 slide to match.

Anyone know the rough value on these? I know I hardly ever see them change hands.

You can usually get an entire NY Bach 6 for less than $1000. Many on the market. I know of 2 (that I don't own) that you could get for that price. Great playing horns.

I have a V16 as well. One can use the bell section of a 36b for a little broader sound on the valve trombone if needed, or if the F-valve register is required. And obviously the 16 bell fits the 36 slide, if one would want that for some reason. Shires small bore slides also fit very well, even though the screw is threaded differently so one can only screw it half way, if that makes sense.

Yeah I didn’t word this well; I meant the value of a V16.

Very few turn up on the used market so it is tough to say with much certainty. From what I have seen... $1000 to $1500.

1-1.5k seems right to me too. Also I did see those horns and am thinking about it. Honestly if I pull the trigger I may end up just looking for a full 6, and then sell the 16 bell section. Decisions decisions

Well, some of those horns really are exceptional, especially considering the pedigree. I don't think "Bones" Malone kept around horns that he didn't like. I'm pretty amazed at some of the horns he's selling.

Interchangeable. Not necessarily something you want to play

My small bore Edwards has a 547 connection because I used an old f attachment to make a first valve (Ab). It makes fast easier.

Because of that I can try a bass slide on a 500 and a 500 on a bass. It does not go well. But if I put the 500/508 on the 547 horn, it plays like a German small slide large bell horn. And again, it does not go well. But neither did the German horn with the similar setup.

A 525/547 on the small bore horn would be good enough it the small slide got trashed on a gig.


Point being.
Find a slide that will play well with the horn and alter the parts to work.
