Olds Recording Trombone Weight
Hi Everyone, I just picked up an Olds Recording and am trying to find a counterweight to fit it. I’ve looked through some past posts and it looks like people were suggesting a custom piece, but that was a while ago so I thought I’d see if anyone had found a better and potentially less expensive solution. The serial number dates it back to around the 1920s, and I’ve tried a few weights, but haven’t gotten lucky yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For mine I took a bach counterweight and made the mounting hole wider. I also lightened it by drilling out some of the inner material

A repair shop can purchase a generic counterweight from Allied Supply. They are not the prettiest looking parts, but they are functional. Your tech will need to measure the brace tube and confirm with Allied whether the counterweight will fit the tube.

The Olds Recording brace is 0.50" diameter. John Sandhagen drilled out a generic (Bach?) counterweight (pulled from one of his drawers) for me - I installed it in 30 seconds. Works great. But I should now take John's suggestion and attach decorative covers for each side of this snazzy weight to better adorn this beautiful trombone.Blabberbucket wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 8:33 am A repair shop can purchase a generic counterweight from Allied Supply.
