About anonymous posting

Post by tbdana »

I don't need to know people's names, though I'd like to, because I'm becoming friends with a few folks here, and would like to know more folks.

But honestly, as impractical as it may be, I'd much rather hear a recording of each poster than know their name. I get more useful information about them that way.

Unless you're heavily into scales in thirds, and flow studies, I don't have anything for you at the moment. And I believe that literature has been adequately covered.

I agree with Dana. Forget needing a name, necessarily, just post your bonafides as a video of your playing.

Yeah, unfortunately some folks are going to look at it this way. But I'll just observe that every single time someone posts a recording of themselves, whether it's doing exercises in their bedroom or posting their latest album, the folks here have been 100% positive and supportive. It's one of the great things about this forum. Let's not play into people's insecurities.

You'd be able to tell if they are talking out of their ass or not about how to play the trombone. If someone sounds like an amateur, I don't need their expert input on the more controversial topics.

This comes in handy when people give advice that I disagree with with but I know they are great performers. I give credence to what hear even though I disagree with it, and try to see if I can wrap my head around it. If they aren't good performers I can just think "here's your sign'

Lots of fun and relevant things. Like what kind of music they like, what their approach to that music is, what equipment they play, what their general performance level is, whether they are fun or super serious, what their tone is like, what they do really well, etc.

Hearing people play is kind of like a dog‘s sense of smell. There’s a whole universe of information there that we can perceive. And, like Harry says, sometimes you know whether to give their opinion great weight or a little less weight, depending what the subject is. But that’s not the main thing. The main thing is you get a sense of who they are a lot more so than if you just had someone’s name.

Putting requirements on membership here is kind of antithetical to what its about. The Chisham tuba forum went through a similar identity crisis, but they made the wrong decisions and now most of the traffic has moved to a new forum that is less restrictive.

If you want an exclusive club, that's ok, just make a new one, don't try to convert this one. And your name requirements will fit better with the Facebook mentality than the phpbb.

Everyone's really on edge it seems.

Nobody wants to make an exclusive club or establish an "elitist hierarchy". The whole point of this forum is that people are supportive of each other and its a place to discuss and learn from each other. I don't see anyone advocating for it to become anything else.

Unless I wildly misunderstood this thread, Dana didn't say she thinks posting a video should be mandatory to be allowed to post here, merely that to her, hearing someone play is more important/relevant than knowing their name. Hardly a controversial opinion.

Whew. Thanks, Max. That's exactly right. And I want to encourage more people to post recordings of any and all kinds. The whole point is that this is a safe space for such activities. We are supportive of each other as trombonists. Though we may disagree about mouthpieces and bore sizes, and may be political polar opposites, everyone who posts a recording gets support, encouragement, praise, and appreciation.

I understand why some folks might be too insecure to post a video or audio file, but let's not pretend that there's some sort of elitist cabal waiting in the wings to laugh at you and exclude you from participation. It's the exact opposite, really. I can't think of a single example where someone's recorded performance was derided, mocked, or picked apart. Thinking that's going to happen is just your insecurity talking.

And I really do love to hear everyone's playing, both because I learn about people from it, and because I just enjoy listening and I'm appreciative that people deign to share it with me. No worries! :)

As much as you think you didn't say it, several people heard it. The idea has a very judgmental feel to it, and people are here for many different reasons,. I've posted a couple recorded sessions, but they were all poorly recorded and probably not even intentionally recorded, and probably not my best performances. Not many people have access to pro equipment and facilities and backup bands, etc, etc.

I had a brief bio posted, but I've taken it down as a result of this and the other discussion. I don't do Facebook, I'm not here for notoriety, i just want to share trombone and music information and I don't care who it comes from or goes to. You always have to evaluate information you get on the internet.

Judging people on the internet is almost always guaranteed to lead you to a wrong conclusion. Real name, false name, no name, pseudonym - doesn't matter, it's all the same.

Can we get back to talking about trombones? We're all happier when we do that.

I am not about to post sound clips here. Neither the time or inclination. Bill W. Knows my playing and I know his, same with Gabe R. Leif A. Has heard me play his trombones in a car park in Oslo. If folk were to dig around, they would find recordings I am on, though I would say that Bruckner motets recorded 45 years ago, for example, tell them nothing about my playing. I've been in the same playing job more than 40 years....that tells you I'm in a rut.

Your playing has been posted in a way. I remember a Scottish Opera post of a rather unusual Janacek opera about a gypsy. It had a small orchestra with one [bass] trombone (you). Quite frankly, given your creds, I would not have any reason to find any fault with your playing. It's us hoi polloi who might feel embarrassed about our efforts.

Encouragement to post audio/video seems fine to me, how can that be controversial if it‘s totally voluntary? I didn‘t read any post which suggests it must be mandatory.

I don‘t mind saying I‘m a total amateur playing at an ok level, nothing more, nothing less.

There are no doubt many experts on here, whether amateur or pro, and whether they prefer to take more notice of posts where people have posted audio/video is up to them.

I suspect there are also a lot of middle-of-the-road players like me, I‘m just as happy to exchange thoughts with them as they may even relate to my struggles better than a gifted superstar. That doesn‘t mean I don‘t value the star players’ input, I‘m also grateful they sometimes take time to reply, but it isn‘t only their posts I‘m interested in.

If I think it‘s useful, I would continue to post audio/video (I‘ve posted a few clips publicly in the past as well as sharing one or two longer clips from concert recordings privately). I‘m not about to start posting an audition video so will take the risk on my posts being ignored by members who feel strongly about having a full view of my playing ability.

P.s. if anyone if really interested to hear a bit of may playing, send me a pm

I don't think that Dana or anyone else was considering making it mandatory. I was only asking, as I stated as a friendly devil's advocate, as to why. As others have stated in many other posts here on The Chat before I do wish that basic information was required. Heck a name and a location would be great. It's so easy to google a name and find out career information about that person. It's pretty easy to figure out who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't. I've also learned throughout the years that what one person admires others will not. Post a recording if you'd like. I'll listen. I listened to Dana's recordings and read her "story" that she posted here awhile back. I found it very interesting and I found the recordings very enjoyable. Anyone who hadn't played in that amount of time and posts something that sounds good takes courage and confidence in themselves. Bill W.

That‘s good to hear, I didn‘t get the feeling that only posts by people with audio/video were well discussed in the past and hope it stays this way. I can’t think of any examples where e.g. somebody was told to shut up or otherwise belittled because their expertise was not verifiable, actually that‘s a good thing about this forum and should be celebrated, it isn‘t the case in all forums or other social media.

Dana, great thread! I think this is a wonderful idea! Personally I'd rather post a video of myself than use my full name. Heck, I'll even go first or second! I know this is a welcoming space. I just don't think anyone wants to hear a returning player than sounds like a first-year-fifth-grade student but I'm willing to put myself out there. Haha!

Plus this place tends to be one of the most anti-elite places for music people. And TC actively welcomes amateur and returning adult players, which I like. So I'd feel comfortable here.

I agree with this. I'm one of those "amateur and returning adult players." I quit for 30 years. This place has been a wealth of information and support for me and for a great many others, and is a place where I can show support for others who are returning to music or who are on their own adventure.

It's a great group, and I like and respect nearly everyone here, and appreciate hearing about everyone's individual journey and all their thoughts and ideas. It's why I post what has been described as "existential question" threads. I get to hear so much, and learn so much. It's a fantastic place for a returning player like me, who is now a hobbyist in kind of a backwater music community. Everyone who posts teaches me something, whether I share their viewpoints or not. It's a very egalitarian forum. :)

Post myself playing? I’m a carburetor kinda guy in a fuel injected world. I still use a flip phone…something in my body does funny things to a smart phone, I just pick one up and it locks up and must be restarted. My old reel to reel tape recorder no longer works. I guess I’m dead in the water…sorry.
