CONN 77H - mouthpiece advice please

Post by RhoniA »

Hi there! I’d appreciate some advice on a new chapter for me please….. a Conn 77H (arriving tomorrow!)

I currently play Diploma level (UK) on a Conn 88H with a Bach 5G mouthpiece
I do a lot of Classical playing with this set up, (attend Junior Conservetoire on a Saturday), and it works very well for me.

More recently, I’ve had opportunity to play an increasing amount of Jazz / Big Band, and love it!
(First chair and plenty of solos now)
The Conn 88H isn’t ideal for this, particularly in the higher registers.
Hence the secondhand Conn 77H :-)

I’d be truly grateful for advice on the best mouthpiece to try with this trombone please?
I’m aware that mouthpieces are ultimately personal preference, but I do need a little guidance on likely suitability and where to start.

From reading through past chats here, the Bach 6.5AL seems to be regularly recommended as a good solid fit for most (so perhaps a good starting point?)
But other comments suggest this is still quite big, and a good intermediate size might be the Bach 7C or Yamaha 48.
(For clarity - I do have a small shank 5G but am aware / advised that this is too big for this model)

Thank you all!

You could start with a small shank 5G. If you decide to go smaller, a good step might be the 6½AL, Bach 7C, Wick 6BS, Wick 7CS, Yamaha 48, Yamaha 47.

Depends on the leadpipe in it. I have owned multiple 77h and they each liked different mouthpieces. One consistent thing for me was anything larger than a 6.5AL was a no go.

Since you use a 5G on your 88H, a 5 (no letter) sounds like a no brainer for your incoming 77H (and could be a revelation for how your chops work). Rim size and shape are kept the same (accounting for the usual Bach variance), just a not-deep cup with a smaller throat and back bore to assist with the high register.

One more option is small shank 5GS

More possibilities:
Denis Wick 9BS [You are in England?]
Denis Wick 7CS
Bach 9
Bach 6¾C
Josef Klier 9C
Laskey 50C
Schilke 47
Schilke 50
Yamaha Nils Landgren

In general, the shallower the cup, the easier to reach high range (and harder to reach low).

Thank you - I have a small shank 5G I can use!

Was advised that 5G not the best choice for 77H, as big and so would be harder in the upper register.
But which mouthpiece to somewhat randomly pick out and try next is quite a minefield
Your suggestions seem a logical ‘intermediate’ next step, and much appreciated.

Thank you - this is consistent with the impression gleaned on reading back through previous posts, that a 5G would not be compatible.

But with so many other mouthpieces suggested for instruments such as this across the various chats, have found it difficult to pick out which you might try first!

(And they’re all expensive so hoping to avoid mistakes!!!)

Thank you - I should edit to say I have a small shank 5G to try at the very outset, but advised not the best to marry with the 77H and a smaller mouthpiece would be better.

And then the choice is really rather complex and confusing…….!

I’ve just looked up your suggestions, to try and understand the differences….. The diameter is constant, so not too much embouchure adaptation needed, but the smaller cup volume would help with the smaller bore and higher register notes?

Would you then expect with time that natural progression would be to a small size?
It seems then an intermediate size would be next step (with good suggestions above)?

Sorry, all very confusing!!! 🫤

Thank you - when I look up the cup sizes, they all seem to say “medium shallow” cup volume.
(Whereas the Cup diameter more obviously lists differing size)
So although I understand the logic, I’m somewhat failing to follow how to pick out the shallower cup sizes?!?!?!
Any pearls of wisdom to help unpick please?
