Stork 1.5 Opinions
I'm currently trying out a friend's heavyweight Stork 1.5 with the standard bore. So far I've been enjoying it and I'm considering getting one of my own. But I'm not sure if I want the standard bore or symphonic. Was wondering everyone's experience with the two different bores

Re: Stork 1.5 Opinions
I really like the Stork 1.5. I have the standard bore and it's one of my "backup" pieces since I play DE as my primary. But the Stork is great. Your problem will be getting one. Last year I ordered a 1.5S from Stork, and they just seemed unable to deliver it. So finding a used one may be your fastest route. Otherwise, expect to wait.

I had a stork 1.5 and liked it until I got a Curry 1.5D. It's along the same path, but further down. Very conical, gives a very clear tone on bass bone. The blank is also pretty heavy.

I'll have to remember that if I decide on getting a Stork and can't find one. How does the rim shape and cup depth compare to the Stork?hyperbolica wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 6:48 am I had a stork 1.5 and liked it until I got a Curry 1.5D. For some reason, im not very keyed into the rim shape. I think the Curry is a little deeper, but more conical, so possibly less overall cup volume. There is a description of the 1.5D on the Curry site.Trombola2112 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 1:51 pm I'll have to remember that if I decide on getting a Stork and can't find one. I played on a Curry for awhile. Interestingly their 1.5 waaaay back in the beginning was closer to a 1 and 1/2 size. Now the 2D is and the 1.5D has a 28mm rim. Also on their website the "contact button" has been disabled. Are they still selling directly?hyperbolica wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 3:35 pmFor some reason, im not very keyed into the rim shape. I heard through a good source that the principal is in poor health. And after just looking at the main page, they have announced closure. I've never used a Curry until a couple of months ago. The 2D might also work well for me. Maybe I'll get one while I can.

I wonder which of the 2D or 1.5D is closer to the Stork 1.5? The Stork specs put it between the 2, maybe a little closer to the 2D. But you can't always trust specs.

Mark Curry is retiring or maybe already did. Closing the mouthpiece business entirely.

The current Curry 1.5D is closer to a stock Stork 1.5. I know because I have both of them sitting right here.Trombola2112 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 19, 2025 12:33 pm I wonder which of the 2D or 1.5D is closer to the Stork 1.5? Having used both, I agree. I prefer the Curry, but both of these are in my view the best bass mouthpieces I've used. You have to get used to how much sound they put out. I've had to learn to back off quite a bit. I wouldn't mind it if there were something in between the Curry 1.5D and the Curry 2D. 1.5D is actually just a tad big, and 2D is just a tad small. I need to get a DE lexan rim put on one. I really don't like metal rims any more - spoiled by lexan.WGWTR180 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 7:08 amThe current Curry 1.5D is closer to a stock Stork 1.5. ...OOOORRRRR.... maybe Doug would start making a line of cups with more V? Doug's stuff has been my go-to for tenor since I started playing again. He's also helped me out a lot on bass, but I vascillate too much on bass pieces. Evidence points to "needs to practice". I was gonna put "needs to practice more", but I think it's accurate as is.

This seems unusual. So you never received it? Did you call and speak to either Phyllis or John?ghmerrill wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 6:28 am I really like the Stork 1.5. Re: Stork 1.5 Opinions
I placed an order on the web site in early August (I don't recall the exact date). On Aug. 7 I received an "Order status changed" message from Stork saying that the order status had changed to "Awaiting shipment". I heard nothing after that, and on Sept. 9 sent an email requesting that the order be cancelled since I'd heard nothing more about it. I then got an email from Phyllis saying that she was sorry they hadn't been able to fulfill the order. I just didn't want to wait longer.
I have independent information from a couple of sources that Stork was struggling with production and delivery during this period for several reasons, and one report of finally receiving a mouthpiece after two months. I believe that, as you say, the situation was "unusual". I don't know how their production and shipping schedule for trombone mouthpieces is doing now, and at some point in the future might order from them again. But I'd expected a reasonable delivery time frame, and after a month just decided to bail at that point.
