What masters degree program should I pick?

Post by OFolden »

I am having a very tough time deciding if I should go to UNT or CSU Northridge for a masters degree in jazz studies. I have been accepted into both. I’ve considered a lot of factors, like location, teachers, the program itself and what my goal is and what I can do in the future from each school, but now I’m kind of torn between the two. I would love any advice or thoughts anyone has.

UNT is a great school, great teachers and a massive studio. You can make a living giving lessons in the greater Dallas area.

Northridge also has a very solid jazz program with great teachers, and more importantly, is in a place you can make a living playing music- even jazz, occasionally.

I play with a lot of grads from both schools.

Maybe your trombone professor from undergrad has a take on which one would be best for you, since he or she knows you pretty well?

What state are you in? I cant speak for CSU Northridge specifically but they should have a number of out of state tuition waivers, so ask about that. IMO cost to attend should factor in to make sure its in alignment with your potential future earning power. My wifes Eastman loans took us a solid 18 years to dispense with...
