Help with Walton's 1st Symphony.

Our local amateur/community orchestra have just started rehearsals for the summer concert and the main work is William Walton's Symphony No. 1.

If any of you have played this before, please can you help on 2 short glissandi in the 2nd trombone part?

First one is in the 2nd movement in the last 2 bars. There is a glissando upwards from E to B natural

Second one is in the 4th movement, 3 bars before rehearsal mark 132. The "quasi glissando" is from top line Ab, down through F to D and then up to E. This is in a Vivacissimo, 3/8time over the last quaver in the bar and onto a dotted crotchet in the next bar.

The instrument being used is a Conn 88H, so the trigger can be used to facilitate any awkward moves.

To me, the best way to do the first would be to start in 7th E, gliss up and change partials before 4th pos B. It's technically a little sloppy, but it's your best chance at playing what's written.

The second one is more complex, breaking it into 2 glisses. Pull the trigger slide 1/2 step, play Ab in t1, gliss down to Eb in t6. From there you could release the trigger and gliss open D 4th to E 2nd.

If all else fails, you might ask the conductor how to handle it.

My first reply was having just seen your response as I was about to get in the car and go and rehearse this symphony. As it turned out, we were only rehearsing the first movement last evening so the glisses didn't come up.

I have tried your suggestions without too much success but they have lead me onto solutions which works better for me.

First gliss. As you suggested, start on E in 7th and then gliss up to Bb in 1st and then, as soon as I get to the Bb, switch to the F side and play the B natural in T2. We will try it next week and see what the conductor says.

Second gliss. I start on Ab in 3rd, gliss down to F in 6th and press the thumb lever as I go, this leaves me on D in T4, then for continuity, I gliss up to E on T2.

They aren't perfect but I don't suppose anyone will notice except the other trombones in the section, and they have their own glisses to sort out!
