Yep, I agree with you about Nils. I don't usually do 'me too' type posts but I particularly like the quality of his solos in respect to nearly always having something interesting to say. He obviously has a staggering technique but only uses it to create music, not just to impress. For instance, check out his soloing all over the instrument on that last clip posted, where he is just as interesting in the low register as the high. I have to confess I did not like the group or the jazz style but I loved Nils' solo.

The other thing I like about Nils is his use of the internet to promote himself and his projects. He is a past master at getting his material picked up by all the search engines. Put any trombone players name into a search engine and I bet you Nils will somehow get you to visit one of his websites or YouTubes. That always gets a wry smile from this marketing manager and I wish I was as successful promoting through the www.

The music styles he plays are wide ranging and he is very careful not to get classified as just a jazz trombone player. He reminds me of the way that James Morrison has always promoted himself. They are peas in a pod in getting their name into the general arena of entertainment as well as being appreciated by the jazz aficionados.

This is one of his tunes that I really like and admit to copying as a solo feature with my band. I'm still working on the pretty sheila to help me with the vocal.

He does very well on that score also and I think one of them is his wife.

What a glorious swinging jazz group that is! John Morrison does not always get a mention but he is playing particularly fine drums in that clip. Both Mark and James are a little too clever for my liking in their solos but I suppose a jazz festival does allow for a little showing off.

James is really the mainstay of jazz in Australia and long may he keep excelling and swinging on all of his instruments the way he does so well. Like my signature says, and whatever instrument he plays, "Don't worry baby, etc." And in case you were ever worried about that quote it is the title of a very famous book by John Sharpe containing the stories of Australian jazz musicians.

Jim just retired this fall. He is playing trumpet with his son on that youtube video.

Obviously, dad was a big influence to Brian.

I am really a big fan of Delfiayo Marsalis these days. There is so much trombone 'tradition' in his style. Here he plays the ballad "Skylark" at The Cotton Club in NYC during the Al Grey Memorial Concert on June 6th, 2009. Accompanying Delffiayo are Chip Crawford on Keyboard, Joe Coch on Guitar and Malik Washington on Drums.

Nice, Graham! We should probably get Delf's name spelled correctly, though. It's Delfeayo Marsalis, unlike the spelling in the youtube clip. They got the more important, musical part correct though!

Delfeayo has stuck to his guns for decades now, tough as it has likely been to be the younger brother of two cultural icons, in Branford and Wynton.

How about this live performance of Hans Zimmer's soundtrack from "Inception", which features our own Alex Iles in the middle of surely one of the biggest bone sections ever assembled, live or on recording. I'm seeing Phil Theele, Charlie Loper, Bruce Fowler, the late Bruce Otto, and hopefully more to be named by Sir Iles.

Hi Bellend! Norway is little, but still I don't know so much about him. The only thing I know is he write a lot music, for orchestra, big bands, movies, everything. In the late seventies and eighties I often listen him in jazz clubs. This clubs did disappear in the 90's. I never speak with him, but he is the idol for many trombonist here in Norway. I have all his music, and he really play beautiful. In Norway he his known by all people. Because he did a lot, both on trombone and as a composer/ arranger.

The young trombonist with the short lighter hair to the left of the bass sax is Joseph Hudson. I taught him at a camp a few years ago when he was about 16 -- great kid and incredible musician. He left Lexington for Interlochen, and now he's at Manhattan. The bass sax player is Jay Rattman, MSM grad. Don't recognize the others.....

I remember that one. I'll have to look it up today. One surprise on this video is the apparent method of "live to 2 track", or no overdubbing at least. Maybe it was during the direct to disc audiophile release era which was happening right about that time.
