FS : German trombone - $250

Post by ttf_Le.Tromboniste »

I have an old German-style trombone for sale, bought a few years ago on the German eBay. Hard to date since it doesn't have any maker's stamp or engraving. Unplated slide, no water key, no tuning slide. My bet would be early 20th century. As early as late 19th century, as late as 1930's. I'm asking 250$ as it's not a GREAT horn, maker unknown, and far from perfect condition. It is however in working condition and it sounds very nice. A very good chance to try a traditional German instrument without cashing out on a Kruspe.

It plays with a nice rich, warm, very dark tone in soft dynamics; you need to brighten up the sound when you push it to keep the core (which is the case on every old German instrument I played). It works very well for German orchestral repertoire with other German trombones. With good care and the right amount of Trombotine and water, the slide is very playable (of course it's not a modern chrome-plated slide).

Specs:
-225mm (8.85") bell
-~12mm-13mm (~.475"-.510") dual bore
-F attachment with typical German-style wrap, operated with a leather strap
-Raw brass inner slides with soldered-on nickel-silver stockings.
-F tuning slide, no main tuning slide
-Springs in the barrels
-All gold brass
-No leadpipe, takes a large shank mouthpiece

The reasons it's only $250 :
-The slide tubes are good, but the slide assembly was in pretty bad condition when I got it. There was a lot of work put on it. It's not perfect (far from it), but after disassembling the inner slide and putting it back together, it became playable. The bottom outer still tends to rub a bit against the barrels when coming back in 1st - one might want to have either or both surfaces filed a bit to increase the tolerance. Because the slide needed all that work and the metal is a bit on the delicate side, we decided to solder the "floating" braces to help give it some structural integrity.

-There is a very small crack at the very, very end of the top stocking. Doesn't affect sound or playability since you never go that far with the outer.

-The bell wire is cracked in one spot.

-Slide bumper is a little bit caved in.

-Valve cap is missing.

PM sent.

I'm not sure I should buy more horns right now. Good luck selling, it looks right, just too difficult to ship cheaply and safely.
