I found these videos recently of George Brunies playing with Art Hodes. The band has Nappy Trottier on trumpet and Jimmy Grenato on clarinet. I have no idea when it was recorded - probably in the 1960s, since George died in 1974. It is competent Dixieland but, more importantly, it gives an excellent listening and viewing of George's trombone ensemble style. I always thought that George laid down many of the basics for Dixieland playing with such bands as the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Muggsy Spanier (on the Big 16), and Eddie Condon's bands.

Further down the page, John Allred guests with Russ and they do some trombonistics on 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen'. My kind of music, along with that 'Tenderly' clip. I have always thought that the Sacramento JF is probably the best of the 'hot' Jazz Festivals, certainly in the US. It's often a stomping ground for Aussie groups because of the Tom Baker connection (Now sadly gone from us). But it is a shame about the average age of the audience and, come to think of it, a lot of the musicians.

I would say he is more mainstream but that is really the way that most of us 'hot' players approach the music these days.

I'll leave the multiphonics to others to enjoy. It doesn't really turn me on.

Evan often plays at that festival, or at least attends it. One of these years I am going to join him.

I very rarely post on this thread...the bad sound on YouTube generally pisses me off too much to do much listening...but this clip is outstanding on any number of levels.

First of all...here is the king of all NYC latin trombonists as far as I am concerned, José Rodrigues, playing freely in his prime with a great rhythm section and band.

Second, I have often expressed my admiration for Charlie Palmieri...Eddie's older brother...as the other side of Eddie. Check out this solo! Balance, elegance, power, originality, knowledge, technique...he had it all. Effortless mastery, for real!!!

Third...the rest of the band is SMOKIN'!!!

Bad sound, but what the hell.

In addition to some fine bass bone section playing by Doug Purviance, you'll find better than average youtube sound, a ballsy Terrel Stafford solo, soulful bass solo, and a unity of concept and phrasing that only comes from playing together week after week. Dig The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra live at The Village Vanguard on "Willow Tree". I'm not sure who wrote the chart, but it sounds like Brookmeyer possibly, or someone quoting his great arrangement on Willow Weep for Me from years ago.

I don't think that's Fred man. Fred has a density of sound that's like JJ, very easy to identify. And it's not really his MO... lacking the riff, more scattered. That said, whoever it is kills it. In a situation like that? Loud band, live, Paris, James Brown. It would be easy to overblow, lose the moment. This guy grabs it by the balls for sure.

I agree and given that he is captured playing a solo on another clip of the same gig, it must be him. Okay, he doesn't seem to phrase how he usually does, but the tempo is much brighter.
