Half valving

Post by bigbandbone »

I've been watching a YouTube video of Arturo Sandoval playing Here's That Rainy Day. The half valving he does is really tastey. Is anybody using half valving on their rotory valve in their ballad playing. How do you make it sound like Arturo? I've been trying all afternoon and just cannot pull off the affect.

Rotors don't really do half valve - too much flat between the ports.

I seem to recall someone making a widget that fitted between the mouthpiece and the receiver that could simulate valve effects.

To my ear, it sounds like he is simulating what we just do with the slide.

I don't like half-valving. It just feels weird. It seems to be much easier on piston valves.

I agree with the other responses here. Half-valving is also not something which is big in jazz because so many players play jazz on straight horns! I've tried to get that effect but in practice it is too sensitive on rotary valves to really get it.

Just a shot but you may be thinking of Dave Bargeron, but his device was a valve you push to articulate.
