I used very fine steel wool on mine and I think it helped. Still makes noise, but no snags or drags. No stains on the metal stockings - they're bright and shiny. I've had mine for at least 2 years, but play it primarily for parades or odd events - not the usual rehearsal or performance.

You must keep the stockings from corroding. Wipe the slide dry frequently, always swab it before putting it away.
Since your stockings are already corroded you'll probably have to polish them, then keep them coated with car wax.

Dryer the better is what my experience has been. I have polished the stockings and then coated with Renaissance wax (used by British Museum on exhibits). Very smooth at start of play. As condensation accumulates, more drag. Good for playing on the beach, or tossing in the sidecar for a quick run somewhere.
