I finally had to kick my yamaha 421G bass bone to the curb. It was the strangest thing. I would have to have the tuning slide pulled soooo far out it was almost falling off and I was still a little sharp! Luckily the internet seller I bought it from has a good return policy!

I just received a new to me vintage 1963 Elkhart made Conn 72H bass bone. Found it on the Sam Ash used gear site. Carlos at Sam Ash Huston was a pleasure to deal with.

Wow, this ones a keeper! Right in tune with the tuning slide pulled about 3/4". Great flexibility. Trigger notes centered and clear. Playing it with a Bach 4G right now, but I'm on the hunt for something that will give me more edge/presence.

Try to find a Conn3B. It has the right moutpiece shank and is designed for that horn.

I use a Warburton 2-piece, about the size of a Schilke 58.

You need "Remington shank" aka B&S taper mouthpieces to make these old Elkhart horns sing!

Pieces in the 1.5G/2G range are also a good fit.

Personally I'd go with a Doug Elliott. Good luck in your search

These horns work best with the smaller 'classic' mouthpieces.... like the Bach 2G and 1 1/2G.... your 4G will give plenty of edge and presence, but the low register will be hard. Cheap end, the Faxx 1 1/2G is great... mid range price, the Bachs, or if you are feeling rich, I use a Symington 1.5

You might also have good luck with an older (long-shank) Schilke 58 which I believe should fit well (better than the Bach pieces) with the "Remington" taper of the 72H receiver. Often available used at a reasonable price.

Symingtons can be had with the correct taper. The 72H can be pretty tolerant of Bach shanks anyway and you can often improve these Conns with a change of leadpipe.

What ill affects, if any, will using a Morris taper mouthpiece instead of a Remington shank mouthpiece have on the way the horn plays? All my Bach large shanks fit without any wobble. But my face does seem noticeably closer to my left hand than I'm used to.

It's Morse (like in Samuel F.B.). You can force Morse taper shanks into the B&S taper leadpipe, but you may find some of the partials don't line up nicely (requires adjustment of the slide position for certain notes). Then again, you may not even notice that if you aren't really sensitive.

And yes, the Morse taper shank fits a bit farther into the receiver than a B&S taper shank.

An old 51d will have the remmington shank as that's what they where designed for
