Help me ID this horn?

Post by Chuckdeez »

I recently got gifted this super delux getzen, but the hand brace is crazy. I was hoping someone might help me figure out why/how/when this horn was produced so I can sell it fairly. Any clues?

The bell section looks like one "flavor" of the Super Deluxe sometimes labeled as the "Dude".

The braces on the handslde look like improvisations. Getzen used a C-shaped piece of hex stock on the lower level horns but I've only seen more conventional looking braces on Super Deluxe instruments. This one appears to have a pair of C-shaped hex pieces soldered in place back to back.

Getzen made some funky horns back then. :D
If you have not goggled Getzen yet, they had a fire in 1963 and lost all their records.
Best guess for age of your horn based on serial number is maybe mid 50's ish?
Honestly, its a huge guess. Do not think even Getzen can tell for sure.
I picked up a 50 Deluxe cheap couple years ago and am fascinated by it.
Not as ornate as the Super Deluxe or Dude.
It's not a stellar player but it is playable and fun to doodle on once in awhile.
Not sure if their use of the hex bar was artistic vision or just what they had lying around.

The Dude was a different horn from the Super Deluxe. They looked similar, but I have never seen a Super Deluxe with the hex stock handle. It looks like someone mated a Dude slide to a Super Deluxe bell.
