2B Valve Trombone

Post by Jimbbob »

Have my eye on a 2B Valve trombone, and I have a couple questions:
I don't have a serial number yet, but the bell markings show Liberty, King Musical Instruments (no HN White). Seems this would be post 1965, correct? Good vintage? Is this dual bore, or 481 single bore?

What slide compatibilities would I need for plug & play? I'd think the obvious would be a King 2B slide, but I thought I read in archives that a King 605 might be an easier (cheaper?) find. Would that work with no modifications?

Any mouthpiece advice would be appreciated. I know these tend to be stuffy, and heaven knows I have a collection of mouthpieces to try out.
Thanks

I believe the Liberty mark was pre-1965. That name was applied to the small bore in the 1930s. It was made dual bore (hence 2B) late in the 1930s so it was called 2B Liberty until the advent of the 2100 models (2102 was 2B, 2103 was 3B, etc.).

The 2B valve section was supposed to replace the 2B slide section. I think the 2B+ also has the same tenon. Don't know about the 605.

Mouthpiece? Most common was 12C sized (King 21), although if that's too small you could use almost anything. I played a 2B (not valve) with a Wick 4BS or Bach 4C, but I use much larger mouthpieces.

Thank you Bruce for your reply.
I am now the proud owner of a 2B Valve Trombone. Not sure when, if ever, I'll take it out in public, but it's a whole lot more fun to doodle on than the beater trumpet I've got.
So, my trombone collection is growing, and I'm looking to thin things down again. However, to do that, I need to buy another trombone, (I'm practicing the pitch to my wife...)
The 2B Bell section is in pretty good shape. I have a Yamaha 354 and an old Conn 4H that I use for small-bore big band stuff. They obviously don't mate with the 2B. I think they're both redundant IF I can find a compatible slide section for the 2B.
So, I'm looking at King slide sections to work with the 2B Bell. Obviously, a 2B slide would be the perfect fit, (and I've reached out to DJ to see what he's got). Perhaps more economically, there are numerous King 606 used horns around, and there's even a nickel silver plated King Tempo, here in town for mid $300's. From my research, it appears that would work.
So, end goal would be to buy a King, either full horn or just slide section, that would mate with the 2B. At that point, I could let go of both the 354 and 4H.

Finally, serial number on the 2B valve section is 607XXX which seems to put it mid-late 70's. Bruce, to your point, I suppose it's possible that the bell section could be older, given the wording on the bell. I've attached a pic of the Bell engraving.

So, other than the update, I guess my only question would be again to query if any folks have any experience mating slides with the 2B's, other than the obvious 2B slide. IE, 606, 605, Tempo etc. I'd also appreciate hearing of any cases/gig bags that might work for a 2B bell, slide, and valve section.

Thanks for reading!
