MF's Hey Jude
I've listened to this arrangement literally 1000 times, but never played the chart until now. That lick going into the 2nd line of chorus is HIGH.

Re: MF's Hey Jude
It's funny how that can happen sometimes. I bet this is song is so engrained in your ear that popping out those Db's will be easier than if you were just trying to increase your range up to that High D partial.
Good luck!

Yes, that arrangement IS ingrained into my brain housing group.
So much so that on sight reading it I played the "wah-wahs" n the final soli section that are on the record but not annotated on the part. My section mates thought I'd gone crazy.

Db's? That's that's just the bread. The butter goes on top of that.

Re: MF's Hey Jude
You see Db's often enough in big band lead trombone charts that the note has to be considered part of the standard range. The top of it, but one you have to have. So this is a great chart to practice.

Re: MF's Hey Jude
On my tenor trombone I have the C# pretty strong, now if I could just get that elusive Db…While actually playing, the highest I’ve played was a C, and that was my own doing, raising the octave I was playing in off the chord sheet I was using. My MF trumpet doesn’t get to have all the fun!

In the 50+ years I've been playing big band charts (the majority of those years playing lead) i can count all the times I've seen notes above C on one hand.
My practical range is to Eb, but it hardly ever is called for.

Re: MF's Hey Jude
You are just lucky. I played in a Big Band where the lead trombone had a few charts that went to the Bb above that. Glad I was playing bassofficermayo wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 9:19 pmIn the 50+ years I've been playing big band charts (the majority of those years playing lead) i can count all the times I've seen notes above C on one hand.

Re: MF's Hey Jude
It’s a pretty nice lead up to it, if Eb is the top of your practical range, I’m sure you’ll be fine. Enjoy!
