The sound is exceptional. It's crackly and dark at the same time. Definitely not tubby. Having a trigger is a definite plus for playing in the low range. The valve action is better than I would have expected, with faster action than most euphoniums. The case (originally for a Conn valve/slide trombone) came out great. I've played horns set up like the DEG Jazzbone--same bore as this but with a tightly-wrapped valve section--and this horn has much better ergonomics and a brighter sound.
Lacquer is not perfect, with some flux bleed around the thin nickel sheets soldered to the valve cluster, and other areas where it's hazy. There's some erosion of the brass on parts of the valve cluster. The trigger is at its absolute limit for adjustment, and I had to loctite the connectors to the rod to make sure that it didn't change dimensions. Finally, the bell is not as far in front of my left hand as I'd like it to be, and my knuckles are very close to the bell rim. Aside from that, it's a fantastic horn.
